How Does a Heat Pump Work?
Raypak air-source heat pump pool heaters work like a refrigerator in reverse. The heat pump extracts heat from warm air, intensifies it with a compressor, delivers the heat to the water, and exhausts the cooler air out the top of the unit. Because it uses warm ambient air to do the work, it’s a very efficient way to heat water. One misconception is about the energy used to run the heat pump. The electricity powering the unit runs the compressor, fan, and controls. The electrical input energy converted to BTUs only amounts to roughly 14,000 BTU — the bulk of the BTU output comes from heat extracted from the air. That’s why heat pumps operate so efficiently and deliver significant energy savings.

What Is C.O.P. and What Does It Mean?
C.O.P. stands for Coefficient of Performance — it’s how efficiency is measured for heat pump pool heaters. It’s simple: BTU Output ÷ BTU Input = C.O.P. How Does It Work?
Raypak Heat-Cool units use a unique reversing valve, enabling the heat pump to remove chill from the water or put it back in, cooling your pool during hot months! Normally, a heat pump gathers heat from the air with its evaporator coil, transfers it to your pool water, then exhausts cooler air. By reversing the process, the heat pump can take heat out of the water and release it into the air. This is also how the unit defrosts. In cold conditions, a heat pump will ice up when the air drops below about 45 degrees. With a heat-cool unit, the ice melts in minutes when in defrost mode. Standard heat pumps rely on ambient air, which can take hours to defrost depending on temperature.

Power Defrost Models
Some climates challenge a heat pump’s performance. Colder temperatures can cause ice to build up on a heat pump’s coil, damaging components and restricting airflow. Most manufacturers include a “Defrost Mode,” but their units can’t heat your pool while defrosting.

If the Power Defrost Heat Pump senses ice buildup, the Power Defrost feature redirects hot refrigerant gas back through the coil, removing any ice without stopping heating.
